Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician II supports the efficient operation of the pharmacy department by preparing and dispensing medications, managing inventory, and providing guidance to less experienced technicians. This role functions under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and may include responsibilities for controlled substances, billing, and precepting new staff.

Essential Functions

• Refills and maintains automated dispensing systems
• Prepares and fills medication orders, including controlled substances, under pharmacist supervision
• Supports medication billing, charges, and inventory records
• Prepares prepackaged and bulk medications with correct labeling
• Oversees restocking and maintenance of pharmaceuticals in compliance with standards
• Assists in training and competency assessments of new or junior technicians
• Participates in quality assurance and process improvement activities
• Responds to inventory and regulatory documentation requirements

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

• Strong knowledge of pharmacy operations, medication safety, and regulatory compliance
• Effective communication and precepting skills
• Competency in pharmacy technology and software systems
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervision
• Proficiency in handling hazardous medications and adherence to safety protocols
• Commitment to teamwork, continuous improvement, and customer service excellence

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Associate degree preferred

Licenses/Certifications

• Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) typically within 60 days of hire or
• Current enrollment in a PharmD program
• Pharmacy Technician registration required per state law or facility policy

Experience

• Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a pharmacy technician or currently enrolled in a PharmD program
